Oz in the News 6.5.15

2289200613_b7f002f10e_mCreator of ‘Oz’ books among featured guests at Olympia Comics Festival  Shanower got an early start on his career in publishing. At age 12, he had a story — heavily reworked by the editor, he notes — published in Oziana, the magazine of The International Wizard of Oz Club. Since then, he’s done so many “Oz” related projects — listed on his website at ericshanower.com — that it didn’t seem worth the time to count them. He’s done his own “Oz” comics and graphic novels. He’s illustrated books. He’s written Oz comics that were illustrated by another artist. “There’s always some ‘Oz’ project that I’m involved in somewhere,” he added. He was drawn to the books, he said, by the child heroes and by the way Baum treats life in a fantasy world. “There’s a down-to-earth feel to the Oz stories,” Shanower said. “They treat strange and outlandish things in very matter-of-fact ways. They’re just sort of like ‘Well, this is the way life is,’ even though they are full of crazy locations and thrilling adventures.”
