Oz in the News 9.2.11

Eric Shanower And Skottie Young Keep Up The Magic In ‘Dorothy & The Wizard In Oz’ #1  On September 28 Marvel Comics will deliver the latest from the multiple Eisner Award winning team of Eric Shanower and Skottie Young, with the premiere issue of Dorothy & The Wizard In Oz #1. Adapting L. Frank Baum’s fourth Oz novel, the series continues to diverge from previous installments with Dorothy, the Wizard and loads of new characters characters stuck in a bizarre underground world populated by vegetable people, invisible bears, wooden gargoyles, dragons and more. It’s exactly the kind of story fans have learned to count on Oz veterans Shanower and Young to transform Baum’s original texts into vivid page after vivid page of comic book goodness.

‘Wicked’ world: Composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz reflects on his Oz with a twist show   Much to his surprise, Stephen Schwartz discovered that the Japanese don’t have a tradition for rhyming lyrics, which makes it impossible to translate lines like “It’s obscene!/Like a froggy, ferny cabbage/The baby is unnaturally/Green!” And so far, he hasn’t found an equivalent idiom in any language to represent the dual-meaning title “For Good.” Bringing the mega-hit musical “Wicked” to the world has its challenges, but it has a few perks, too.  “Because of ‘Wicked,’ I’ve been seeing the world,” the composer-lyricist said last week by phone. “I’ve gotten to go to premieres or go earlier in the process and do a little bit of work” on productions around the globe.
